NEW IGUANA ORIGINAL ON ITS WAY TO JAPAN

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of sending a new Iguana Original to this magnificent country that is Japan. More precisely the island of Okinawa is a unique region in Japan with a fabulous and perfectly adapted environment to the force of the amphibious boat.

Here are some pictures of the preparation of the Iguana Original.

THE IMPORTANT STEP FOR AN AMPHIBIOUS BOAT, THE FIRST SEA TRIAL

Why is a sea trial important for the start of an Iguana’s life? It is imperative to be able to validate and control the Iguana in all its facets and aspects, whether on the beach or in the sea. In addition, this allows us to test different speeds and its 360-degree mobility.

Testing the boat at sea is also important. There are several checks such as progressive speed to obtain the maximum number of knots or even turns. All of these are routine tests that we carry out on a regular basis.

After this stage, there is all the preparation for departure with the cleaning of the boat as well as the start of packing the Iguana. It takes half a day to make it perfect for the customer.

TRANSPORTING AN IGUANA FROM THE SHIPYARD

When the preparation has come, the production team packs the boat to protect it during the journey. This boat will be received by our sales representatives upon arrival. When the truck arrives, the boat, perfectly wrapped, is lifted and placed on top then tied all around to be sure the Iguana won’t move.

Each boat follows a strict method that we put in place to ensure everyone’s safety as well as to achieve customer satisfaction. We do everything in our capacity to ensure smooth delivery.

DISCOVER THE IGUANA FISHER’S IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURES

Step by step, the Iguana Fisher is taking shape. We therefore keep you informed of the latest progress of the boat.

This amphibious boat will be perfectly adapted to the coast of New Zealand to fulfill its main mission: to allow customers wanting to fish and discover new places and sensations.

SOME PHOTOS OF THE PROGRESS OF THE IGUANA FISHER

It's always a pleasure and a challenge to work on building a model for the first time, it's exciting.

The installation of the kitchenette is underway on the boat. You will therefore find a sink to clean your fishing tackle and your hands. There is also a fish tank to rinse them cleanly with fresh water. The kitchenette also includes a fridge and three storage drawers, to accommodate your catches. Everything is designed to be practical and comfortable. Spend quality time aboard your Iguana while practicing your favorite activity. We have thought of everything to optimize your experience aboard our amphibious boats.

The next steps for building this amphibious boat will be the installation of everything that needs to be above the hull with the after-decking. We will have the chance to observe later some inept installations at the Iguana Fisher which we can’t wait to show you. After this entire installation phase there will of course be a sea trial in order to carry out tests to finally be able to deliver the boat.

MEET BENOIT BEUKELS, OUR INDUSTRIAL MANAGER

This month, we are very happy to introduce Benoit Beukels, our industrial manager. A key element in the organization of the Iguana Yachts shipyard, Benoit is responsible for maintaining quality, integrating customer requests, monitoring deadlines, and ensuring that each boat is on time.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE?

“After a degree of 2 years in industrial product design with a focus on CRO and product, I continued with a professional license in composite materials because, at the time, I had started kitesurfing and had the ambition to manufacture my own composite kite. I worked 4 years in the automotive industry at Renault in the quality department during the development phase. When I wanted to go one step further, I decided to return to my studies at an engineering school with a prep course in Saint Nazaire. I went to Nice after completing my studies to work in the elevator industry. The discipline of the automotive industry led me to enter this field, dealing with schedule management and site supervision. Then, I went to Australia to work and improve my English. I was planning to stay for a year, working on projects, and after 2 months, I found a position as an engineer for industrial valves for nickel mines and oil & gas. I worked in the design office improving valves to handle water in a very aggressive manner with materials like titanium. I was offered 3 options by the company: go to Madagascar to develop the branch, stay in Australia, or go to New Caledonia to develop the branch. So, I chose the third option. I found a challenge there, but also a conducive living environment for my passion, which was still kitesurfing.”

“I evolved there over time with on-site technical responsibilities for valve repair. It’s worth noting that these valves weigh more than 2 tons for nickel factories. When I arrived, we were 12, and I left 9 years later with more than 30 people in different departments and a structured organization. When I came back to France, I got a job in petrochemicals, but I felt a lack of intellectual stimulation and challenge. My profile was on standby, and I was contacted by an intermediary to join Iguana. I found an interest in testing a new environment and work setting with an innovative and stimulating concept, backed by unique technology. Moreover, the fact that it is a Normandy-based company, located in the Caen region for the luxury market, played a role in my decision to join Iguana.”

HOW IS YOUR JOB AT IGUANA YACHTS?

“I have been with Iguana for a year and a half now, and it’s always a source of pride to deliver these amphibious boats from a Norman shipyard that are unique in the world and present in several countries. There is potential, and that’s what makes it stimulating because each boat is unique in its manufacturing, a source of pride every day. The challenge is different, with a human aspect and a family structure where you have to give 100% to make it work. My position is industrial manager, with a part of the job involving the design office. The goal is to ensure that everything goes well from the moment of order until the boat leaves the shipyard and meets the customer’s expectations. It requires adhering to a supply cadence with a schedule to follow while managing daily issues. I also wear the hat of human resources for the production part. It involves finding alternatives and technical solutions for parts or assembly. There is also a social aspect so that teams can work in a good environment. What I currently enjoy the most is facing daily challenges, challenging team leaders, and their team members to meet deadlines, and thinking about other organizational aspects to make everything align. I have had experience in management and human relations, starting with Romania. It’s a different culture, as with Australia or New Caledonia.”

The boat I am the most proud of is, I think, the first Iguana Sport. We had so many adventures on this boat, but I believe it represents what Iguana is capable the most.

WHICH PROJECT ARE YOU REALLY PROUD OF?

“The boat I am most proud of is, I think, the first Iguana Sport. We had many adventures with this boat, but I believe it represents what Iguana is capable of the most. It’s very beautiful and allows for stunning images. Of course, we can always do better, and understanding mistakes to improve is essential, but we are very proud of this boat. We aim to improve with each boat in all aspects. That’s the goal of industrialization: every method, operation, and product must be better.”

HOW IS YOUR TEAM ORGANIZED?

“In each assembly service, there is a team leader. These team leaders are in direct contact with me to allocate tasks. They are free to organize their teams. However, I will intervene when resources need to be lent from one service to another. When I talk about resources, I mean a person from one team who can help another team with a mission to advance the process. I still leave the person’s choice to the team leaders to maintain continuity with their teams.”

For me, Iguana, in three words, is innovative, challenging, and visionary. I am happy to have accepted this challenge. Building a boat is difficult, but having this type of boat in Caen is a pleasure. It's a dream.

DISCOVER THE BEFORE DECKING TEAM AT IGUANA SHIPYARD BY: FABRICE CHIRAIN

For our avid newsletter readers, it’s a familiar routine to find a piece spotlighting the dedicated teams steering the Iguana crafting journey.

In this edition, our focus turns to the before-decking step, with a special spotlight on Fabrice Chirain. Discover more about how his team transforms a simple hull into a wonderful and powerful amphibious boat.

Here is Fabrice Chirain, our before-decking leader, as he shares his perspectives on the realm of Iguana Yachts.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER?

I have a degree in electromechanics and worked in industrial maintenance at Moulinex for 15 years, starting at the age of 23 after a stint in the army. After Moulinex closed, I opened my own business installing kitchens for 10 years. Later, I switched to building renovations and then became an employee at Lapeyre as a carpenter. Finally, I was contacted by Iguana’s human resources and received a job offer to join the company. Even though I had no experience in boats or marine activities, I accepted the challenge to explore something new.”

WHEN DID YOU START AT IGUANA?

Fabrice Chirain, Before-decking Leader

I joined Iguana about three years ago and initially had a versatile role, working on various tasks such as electrical work, pre-decking, and post-decking due to my diverse experience. After six months, I proved my skills and had the opportunity to become the pre-decking team leader. Working with my team has always been enjoyable; they are smart and efficient, creating a pleasant working environment. I had previous team management experience when I had six employees under my responsibility. I always strive to encourage my team to excel and find it important to pass on my knowledge, especially emphasizing the importance of safety

In my team, everyone is trained for various roles, whether in pre-decking, some positions in other post-decking teams, or even as electricians. This means each team member excels in their tasks or can help other teams on different boats. At this point, the boat can move to other stages, and anything that needs to be added above the deck can be incorporated.”

I love my work at Iguana; it is very exciting. What I appreciate here is that everyone gets along,
Everyone works in a good atmosphere.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK FOR IGUANA YACHTS?

“On my arrival day, they were decking a boat, not the initial one, which reassured me that many had been done before. When you see a boat rolling into the shipyard, it’s surprising. Crafting my first Iguana as a team leader was amazing, realizing that we are the only ones in the world who can produce this. Since I decked an Iguana as a team leader, dozens of boats have passed through my team’s hands. It is something I am really proud of.”

Initially, I had never heard of an amphibious boat; it’s really cool to be able to make an Iguana, and it’s a source of pride. I’m the only pre-decking leader for an amphibious boat globally. By building boats like this, we can be recognized for our technical skills and use them to the best of our abilities. I draw a lot of positive aspects from my experience.

In Iguana, there is a lot of mechanical work due to its amphibious nature. We handle mechanisms like activating arms and tracks, all placed in compartments beneath the deck and within the hull. Our role involves preparing these compartments, installing mechanical elements, connecting them, and then sealing the deck onto the hull. The boat is like a box with a lid, but once closed, the lid cannot be removed. In summary, before the boat moves to the next stage in our shipyard, I must deliver the hull with the integrated deck and functioning mechanics.

It’s always interesting and challenging when a new boat arrives in the factory, especially with new models. Starting from scratch and providing precise and quality work on a hull we don’t know yet is exciting. We step out of our comfort zone. For example, we look forward to working on the new Iguana Bow Rider or custom projects, like the shorter Iguana we recently made for a client. For this example, we had to reconsider locations and part sizes, and rethink the boat’s plan. We often collaborate with the Design Office, whether for managing special projects or creating method sheets for our organization.”

The before decking team:

  • Fabrice Chirain (leader)
  • Maxime Gasson
  • Théo Galinière
  • Alexandre Quetineau
  • Mathieu Medard
  • Madison Larabi
