DISCOVER THE BEFORE DECKING TEAM AT IGUANA SHIPYARD BY: FABRICE CHIRAIN

For our avid newsletter readers, it’s a familiar routine to find a piece spotlighting the dedicated teams steering the Iguana crafting journey.

In this edition, our focus turns to the before-decking step, with a special spotlight on Fabrice Chirain. Discover more about how his team transforms a simple hull into a wonderful and powerful amphibious boat.

Here is Fabrice Chirain, our before-decking leader, as he shares his perspectives on the realm of Iguana Yachts.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER?

I have a degree in electromechanics and worked in industrial maintenance at Moulinex for 15 years, starting at the age of 23 after a stint in the army. After Moulinex closed, I opened my own business installing kitchens for 10 years. Later, I switched to building renovations and then became an employee at Lapeyre as a carpenter. Finally, I was contacted by Iguana’s human resources and received a job offer to join the company. Even though I had no experience in boats or marine activities, I accepted the challenge to explore something new.”

WHEN DID YOU START AT IGUANA?

Fabrice Chirain, Before-decking Leader

I joined Iguana about three years ago and initially had a versatile role, working on various tasks such as electrical work, pre-decking, and post-decking due to my diverse experience. After six months, I proved my skills and had the opportunity to become the pre-decking team leader. Working with my team has always been enjoyable; they are smart and efficient, creating a pleasant working environment. I had previous team management experience when I had six employees under my responsibility. I always strive to encourage my team to excel and find it important to pass on my knowledge, especially emphasizing the importance of safety

In my team, everyone is trained for various roles, whether in pre-decking, some positions in other post-decking teams, or even as electricians. This means each team member excels in their tasks or can help other teams on different boats. At this point, the boat can move to other stages, and anything that needs to be added above the deck can be incorporated.”

I love my work at Iguana; it is very exciting. What I appreciate here is that everyone gets along,
Everyone works in a good atmosphere.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK FOR IGUANA YACHTS?

“On my arrival day, they were decking a boat, not the initial one, which reassured me that many had been done before. When you see a boat rolling into the shipyard, it’s surprising. Crafting my first Iguana as a team leader was amazing, realizing that we are the only ones in the world who can produce this. Since I decked an Iguana as a team leader, dozens of boats have passed through my team’s hands. It is something I am really proud of.”

Initially, I had never heard of an amphibious boat; it’s really cool to be able to make an Iguana, and it’s a source of pride. I’m the only pre-decking leader for an amphibious boat globally. By building boats like this, we can be recognized for our technical skills and use them to the best of our abilities. I draw a lot of positive aspects from my experience.

In Iguana, there is a lot of mechanical work due to its amphibious nature. We handle mechanisms like activating arms and tracks, all placed in compartments beneath the deck and within the hull. Our role involves preparing these compartments, installing mechanical elements, connecting them, and then sealing the deck onto the hull. The boat is like a box with a lid, but once closed, the lid cannot be removed. In summary, before the boat moves to the next stage in our shipyard, I must deliver the hull with the integrated deck and functioning mechanics.

It’s always interesting and challenging when a new boat arrives in the factory, especially with new models. Starting from scratch and providing precise and quality work on a hull we don’t know yet is exciting. We step out of our comfort zone. For example, we look forward to working on the new Iguana Bow Rider or custom projects, like the shorter Iguana we recently made for a client. For this example, we had to reconsider locations and part sizes, and rethink the boat’s plan. We often collaborate with the Design Office, whether for managing special projects or creating method sheets for our organization.”

MEET OUR NEW US REPRESENTATIVE: IRIS BRUGIDOU

Iris has been part of the company for nearly 4  years now. She started as Marketing Manager and is now in  charge of the development of Iguana Yachts in North America. Get to know her in this interview and learn more about her personal attachment to the company: as her last name suggests, she is the daughter of Antoine Brugidou, Iguana Yachts’ founder. She is now based in Montreal, Canada and she tells us more about her new position as a US representative.

Working in a family business is very rewarding as it adds a lot of personal meaning to my work.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEFORE IGUANA ?

“I joined EM Lyon Business School and obtained a master’s degree in management, entrepreneurship and innovation. My master’s program, IDEA, focused on the design thinking methodology, and it was in collaboration with Centrale Lyon. I was exposed to design thinking and marketing even before joining Iguana. After graduating, I joined a company called Aktan, where I worked in Service Design and provided innovation consulting to large and small businesses. Our user-centric methodologies aimed at improving existing services, discovering new ones, and improving the overall customer experience.

In March 2020, I was supposed to start a new position in London in Service Design. The UK is at the forefront in this field, offering many exciting opportunities. However, my contract was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as I couldn’t travel or be present on the first day of the job. It was at this point that Iguana reached out to me. They were looking for someone in the marketing department. The offer was to work on Iguana’s digital experience for a few months, and I loved it so much that I never left the company.”

I remember, I've heard about Iguana for the first time at the family dinner table. Antoine talked about his amphibious boat idea. He was looking for an easy way to launch your boat that did not involve a trailer, holding the boat in waves (it usually ended up being me when I was a teenager!), getting completely soaked or waiting for hours for the tide to come up. I was young and quite far from the Iguana project. 15 years later, I am part of the Iguana team: the company has grown and evolved so much!

WHAT ARE YOUR MISSIONS AT IGUANA ?

“During my first three years at Iguana, I was involved in pure marketing, covering operations, events, digital marketing, content production, advertising, and public relations. I was responsible for developing and structuring the marketing department.

What was exciting about Iguana was that there was a lot to do in terms of marketing, especially in repositioning digital marketing. We are a very international company, and digital marketing is one of the ways to reach our customers. The multinational aspect is fantastic because we interact with people from the Philippines to Australia to the US. You get to discover various countries, cultures, and places where I never thought I’d work.

I found myself handling all aspects of marketing, which was fascinating because we were dealing with an incredible, innovative product. We were focused on a go-to-market strategy to promote a new technology and usage that completely transforms the way people use boats. It was a complex but incredibly interesting challenge. Marketing and Service Design are closely linked, as we aim to understand how people think, how they adopt our product, their habits, and how we meet their needs. This is why my previous experience was highly relevant.

Moreover, I’m impressed with Iguana’s teams. The people here are amazing, and everyone contributes with their unique skills. Iguana makes you resourceful and helps you grow, constantly developing new skills. For example, when I first joined Iguana, I found myself going from organizing a photoshoot with airsoft players, to walking in the mud to check the beach access of a client, to visiting a customer on his yacht in Dubai. You never know what to expect!

In recent months, I have also taken on business development, particularly in North America. This involves finding new distributors, promoting the brand, and establishing a European brand in a region where American-made products dominate the market.”

NORTH AMERICA DEVELOPMENT

“I am now based in Montreal in Canada and actively contribute to the growth of the brand by supporting our current distributors and developing our dealer network in the US.

We are seeing significant traction in terms of demand in the United-States. Our product fits well in terms of boat size, mindset and functionality. We have now 4 models tailored the the North American market: the Iguana Sport, the Iguana Fisher, the Iguana Commuter and the Iguana Bow Rider.

We see huge potential in the Northeast with thousands of miles of coastline, houses on the shore and no docks, saturation of marinas and ports, numerous islands and sandbars to explore.”

THE FUTURE OF IGUANA YACHTS

“I see a bright future for amphibious boats, especially in terms of sustainability. Having a boat that does not require to  build any  heavy infrastructure to be operated like marinas, docks or ports is much more virtuous for the environment. Most small leisure boats today stay all-year round in the water at marinas and are used very little. For small units, it makes more sense to keep boats outside of the water where they don’t get damage or release toxic products in the sea. Moreover, worldwide ports and harbors are congested and create road trafic. Iguana, to me, is a future and sustainable solution.”
